Highlights

This is a "for those who do not know" entry.

Every once in while I will do illustrations for Highlights for Children magazine.

Being published in the mag is a great honor but not the greatest reward, it is the

Illustrators Party that Highlights has given to its artist for all the years it has been

around. Another opportunity to meet illustrators from around the country and just

relaxing is what the party is all about in Honesdale PA. Every year we go we feel as

if we just got back from a month long vacation and we begin counting down for next

years party.

Thanks to everyone at HIGHLIGHTS....thanks

There is also a Costume night during the Illustrators Party

and this years theme was "The Enchanted Forest."

"For those who do not know" I have twin girls

and for me  "The Enchanted Forest" was Endor

Just finished illustrating a new book by Rosanne D. Parry Daddy's Home.

The most difficult aspect of the book was to keep the child gender neutral.

Here are two of the spreads with text to be placed.

Cyrano de Bergerac

Wednesday, 24 September 2008 09:55 by david
While during my normal blog reading rounds I was reading Jake Parker and saw his rendition of Oscar Wilde for a site collecting literary portraits. I gave a stab, even being not well read. I thought of a person that would be... Dr. Niles Crane... and took his cue.

Following one of his obscure references led me to Hector Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac who was a French dramatist and duelist who is now best remembered for the many works of fiction which have been woven around his life story. In these fictional works he is featured with an overly large nose; portraits suggest that he did have a big nose, though not nearly as large as described in Rostand's play and the subsequent works about him.

I sketched it out last night and sent it to Seven Gettis and to my suprise he was shocked. Steven tried to get in touch with me several months ago through www.totoroforestproject.org, to request a sketch from me.

I encourage you to check the site out, another great colaboration. www.digitalmedusa.com/sgettis/word

the auction, the book, the people

Monday, 15 September 2008 04:27 by david

I cannot begin to tell everyone how exciting last weekend was at Pixar for the Totoro Forest Project auction. It was amazing to meet so many of the faces that go with the blogs I read and the art I admire. Just to be able to walk as one of the them was a true honor. The auction was a huge success in raising double what was expected. But the efforts are not over... please be ready to purchase your copy of the Totoro Forest Project BOOK. It has tons of amazing work cover to cover and the book is a piece are art too. Much of the efforts have been donated and all profits of the book do go to the charity.

Thanks again to all,

the book

I am a reel boy

Tuesday, 26 August 2008 11:05 by david

Here is a little reel I have always wanted to put together and never had the time.

In fact, I still do not... but did it anyway. I laugh in the face of Mr. Time.
